NEW JERSEY

Since the day I signed up for the New Jersey Marathon, which was one hour after crossing the finish line of my previous marathon, it was my dream to ride my Harley from my house to Asbury Park, NJ home of Bruce Springsteen, to run the New Jersey Marathon.

I finished work early, filled the saddle bags, and took off towards the Varizano bridge hoping the clouds would contain the rain at least until I arrived at my destination.

I pulled up to the hotel at around 4:00pm. Rainbow flags hanging all over the building and a nightclub attached to the hotel made it very clear that this was a party hotel and I, for the time being, was out of my element. I made it to bed at a decent hour the first night after a restaurant and three bars. By the time I got back to the hotel it was lit up like a god damn runway at an airport. People were pouring in and out of the lobby and the sounds of awful club music were all around. I went to bed and it was as if my bed was right in the center of the dance floor. The bass was so incredibly loud I felt as though I put 50 cents into a coin slot to make the bed vibrate on purpose. That mixed with the neon signs outside of my window made it very apparent that this was the worlds worst hotel for anyone looking to get some sleep. (I should clarify that I did not choose this hotel. It was chosen by a teammate who is usually put in charge of planning because he prides himself in being the best planner on the team. Which he usually is. Until now).

I picked up the phone and called every other hotel in the area and they were all sold out. Luckily I was tired enough that I fell asleep regardless of the bass. The next morning I switched to a room on the other end of the hotel as far away from the club as possibly.

A 3 mile run with the team, breakfast, shower, off to the expo. We picked up our numbers and had a beer at the bar next door which happened to be a race track that wasn’t currently running any horses but was open for business to make bets on the big race down in Kentucky.

We made our way back to town and found an amazing restaurant that was situated in what looked like at one point was the home of a very wealthy man. The food was amazing. Two bottles of wine were killed along with oysters, pasta, and deserts. On our way back to the hotel we searched far and wide for somewhere to pick up some breakfast for before the race. Eventually we found a small conveinince store with a sign outside that said “Worlds Best Breakfast.” We went inside. I asked the man for 6 scrambled eggs. He cracked the eggs and poured them on a small skilled and let them fry. While watching him try to slice them into sections in order to flip them over, I screamed over the counter “Hey man, just take the spatula and fuck those eggs up. Move them around.” I taught the owner of a place that makes the “Worlds Greatest Breakfast” how to scramble an egg and I’m damn proud of it.

Back to the hotel. Alarm clock at 5:15 am. Off to the race.

The weather was perfect. I took a great shit and felt healthy and confident. At mile 15 I totally died. Luckily my teammate, Josh, was running with me the entire time. We both struggled for a half a mile at a time for the rest of the entire race. At one point I began to think to myself, I felt much better than this in Anchorage. Seconds later, Josh asked me if I was feeling better or worse than I felt at this point in the race in Anchorage. To which I replied… “I’m fucking dying bro.” Which was a mantra that continued between the two of us for the rest of the day.

We pushed on towards what would become the greatest finish of my life. Every mile I was in sever pain and wanted to quit. But after 18 fucking weeks I wasn’t about to let New Jersey get the best of me. I left Josh behind at about the 25 mile mark and went on to kick hard over the finish line for a 12 minute PR of 3:27:27. And that my friends, is the Worlds Greatest Breakfast.

Luc: 3:27:27* PR
Josh: 3:28:30* (3 weeks after Boston)
Jesse:  3:45:08* (First Marathon)
Avery: 1:58:44* (First Half Marathon)

I’M ON MY PERIOD

5 Days to go till the New Jersey Marathon and I’ve got a sinus infection. I’m fairly certain my body is on to me and this is its way of preparing my immune system for the race. This has happened in the past on at least one other occasion. I suppose the best way to get me to rest, stay sober, and sleep a lot was to get sick. So bravo body, I hope you’re ready for Sunday!

Love your blog, style, and St. Jerome!
Here’s my question: I started running in the fall on the treadmill and I really enjoy it, but I am ready to be an outdoor runner for the spring & summer weather. Problem is, running outside in NYC is a little intimidating to me. I live in Brooklyn-  so I have a lot of options (sidewalks, parks, bridges) I just don’t really know where to start. Any advice for a newbie like me?

Thanks for dropping by!

A good starting point would be Prospect Park. Or one of the 3 bridges that connect BK to Manhattan. -There’s 4 options with no cars involved.

You didn’t leave your name so I don’t know if you’re a guy or a girl but my advice is to grow a pair.

The treadmill is so boring. Go out there and see the world and be a part of its energy. Feed off the energy that you’re creating.

Happy running!

THE MAJESTY OF DEFEAT

Saturday. 16 on the schedule with 12 @ marathon goal pace. I reluctantly put my shoes on and headed out into an unbelievably beautiful day. Shorts, singlet, bare skin, sunglasses, 54 degrees, sunshine.
My plan was a 2 mile warm up followed by 12 miles at 7:57 followed by a 2 mile cool down which I’d hoped would be more of a continuation of the faster miles than a cool down.
I got through three miles as planned. Right on schedule for the first three, starting to warm up a bit. As soon as I clicked four I hit it. The proverbial wall. I was finished. A mile and a half from home with an outfit that is nowhere near appropriate for anyone not running at more than a moderate pace. Shorts so short that that slightest wind might divulge my manhood. An outfit I strut around in proudly while moving about through my daily mileage -the worst attire one could possibly hope to be wearing for a disappointing walk home after a defeat. Then again who am I to be one who invites judgment as to my attire. I am after-all wearing purple tiger stripped spandex on the cover of my first novel.

Home, food, hot bath, regroup. I decided to hit the last yoga class of the day and call it a sober night. And by a sober night I don’t mean the typical three quarters to one and a half bottles of wine I drink on any given “night off.”
8 hours of sleep, church, home, food, regroup. I went so far as to put on my running pants hoping to get in 8 miles to put me at a mere 40 miles for the week. Some 8-10 miles short of what is on my schedule, although the previous weekends cruise served as a better than average excuse.
Pants, shirt, socks… I stopped before I put my shoes on and checked my running schedule. Due for 8 miles at a moderate tempo tomorrow did I really want to do 8 miles on what should realistically be my only day off for the week? I sat down and yet again checked the yoga schedule.

Did I really want to do yoga and regroup to start again with fresh legs on tomorrows run and finish out a strong week, or was the agony of the previous days defeat still weighing heavy on my brain? It was very obvious to me that it was the latter. Completely unmotivated I decided to pack my iPod for the first time in lord knows how long just for a bit of inspiration. I ran a moderate 8:00 minutes flat the first two miles and when I got to the park it was on. 7:30, 7:11, 7:18 with the huge hill……

I ran a 46:38 10K knocking a full 2 minutes off of my 10K PR (set last May).

It wasn’t that I ran out of inspiration, It was that I needed to break up the monotony. I used the inspiration I found deep within today to sign up for 3 races in the next two months.

See you at the finish line!
