Love your blog, style, and St. Jerome!
Here’s my question: I started running in the fall on the treadmill and I really enjoy it, but I am ready to be an outdoor runner for the spring & summer weather. Problem is, running outside in NYC is a little intimidating to me. I live in Brooklyn-  so I have a lot of options (sidewalks, parks, bridges) I just don’t really know where to start. Any advice for a newbie like me?

Thanks for dropping by!

A good starting point would be Prospect Park. Or one of the 3 bridges that connect BK to Manhattan. -There’s 4 options with no cars involved.

You didn’t leave your name so I don’t know if you’re a guy or a girl but my advice is to grow a pair.

The treadmill is so boring. Go out there and see the world and be a part of its energy. Feed off the energy that you’re creating.

Happy running!

Lüc-
I want to thank you for the inspiration you’ve given me. Your blog brought me out of mediocrity and into greatness. 6 months ago I couldn’t even run a mile. Pathetic and embarrassing. Now, I’m running 3 miles/3 days a week. Reading your entries about struggling through a half marathon or a marathon seemed not so different from me trying to arrive as a runner. I was able to see that even though it looks easy for long distance runners, they’re fighting a battle too; it just happens to be at mile 20 instead of my 2nd mile. I signed up for a 5K and I’m ready to kick some ass all thanks to you. Hopefully this time next year it will be a half marathon. The Drunk Diet literally changed my lifestyle and I’m so grateful for all your help.

P.S. Thanks Drunk Diet! I’ve lost 10 lbs haha

Hey Luc,
First, love your blog, very refreshing and honest compared to others out there.  I have 2 running questions.
1. I run on my toes, like a freakin fairy.  It absolutely kills my calves even 3-4 days later.  I’ve tried to consciously change my technique to running on the balls of my feet but find that I am completely off balance and can’t find my stride.  Any suggestions?
2. What type of ear buds do you use? I’ve tried in-ears, and the in-ears with behind the ear straps (not sure of the technical name). I’ve tried about 5 different brands and not one of them stays in my ears when I run. I’m constantly re-positioning them, which is so much more damn irritating than my fairy-running problem.

From one hard partying New Yorker to another, you rock!
Cristina.

My first suggestion for the fairy running is this… Do your best to focus your foot strike to mid-foot, but don’t think about it too much. Everyone runs differently. As for your calves, of course they hurt! You’re using them! They’re supposed to hurt! Calf pain is not something to worry about. Comsume plenty of potassium just to be safe, and pat yourself on the back after every run.

As for ear-buds….. I gave up running with music about 6 months ago, and ever since I am a much happier man. Treadmill running however is different. I still listen to music if I find myself on a 12 mile treadmill run at 1:00pm in 100 degree weather.

I get the $20 Sony’s and I’ve never had a problem with them. Other than losing them of course.

Thanks for writing and run safe Christina!

Drunk Diet reader Mara from Spain writes….

Hi Lüc! First, thank you for such an amazing blog. I enjoy a lot your words and they are really helpful. Thanks for the inspiration. My question is: is there a proper time to run during the day? You go running after breakfast, right?
I”m running before dinner (8pm) and sometimes after.
Maybe doing it in the evening is helping me to sleep better? – am I wrong?
I’m waiting for your answer :) Thanks!

Hello Mara! The answer is, there is no answer. I do the majority of my runs in the morning before I eat. However, it depends on the type of run. For instance if I’m doing a long run of more than 10 miles, I generally prefer to have a meal and then run two hours after eating. Since I worked nights for nearly 10 years, I do a great deal of runs in the dark. It’s not uncommon for me to go out and run after 10:00pm, although these days I’m becoming earlier and earlier. Those 4:30am alarm clocks before a race come awful early.

Generally it’s not best to run before bed because you will be wired. Your happy juices will be flowing for a couple of hours post run, keeping you awake. Which is exactly why it’s better to run first thing in the morning. A nice run to start off the day will guarantee you have a better day. When your boss busts your balls about putting your post it notes in the wrong place, you won’t care so much having already accomplished something solely for yourself.

Thanks for reading! Happy running!

Lüc, what is the difference between jogging and running? Can the difference be explained by comparing mph?

My Reply:

Jogging is generally done casually with a mustache on a Sunday afternoon in the 1980′s.

Running is more complicated and has terms like PR’s, 5K, Heart Rate Monitor, Half-Marathon, Shin Splints, Ultra, Blisters, Wicking and Recovery.
